Tokyo Olympic Skateboard for Ripples chips

To celebrate skateboarding’s debut appearance at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, NZ Olympic team partner Eta briefed Daron Parton to create artwork for this gnarly, custom-designed skateboard deck. The one-of-a-kind skateboard was offered as a promotional prize on the snack brand’s social media accounts during the Games and brought in a stack of entries.

Daron’s skateboard artwork incorporates elements from the imagery he created for the Eta Ripples chips packaging re-brand, which captures the positive memories of fun times Ripples fans have enjoyed with family and friends. The deck features familiar characters from the packaging in celebratory poses, cheering on an Olympic skateboarder. Vibrant cherry blossom flowers, considered the national flower of Japan, adorn the edges of the deck.

Daron admits that crafting custom skateboard graphics is something he’s never done before, and while his kickflips and fakies may not be up to Olympic standard, it’s fair to say he did a rad job on the board design. Our client at Eta tells us that the competition was a great success, bringing in almost 1,400 comments from followers and adding over 500 followers to the brand’s Instagram page.

In addition to designing the board’s graphics, Daron also organised the printing and managed the process of licensing with the NZ Olympic Committee. Definitely a podium-winning performance!
