You’re 6 years old and you’ve become aware that there are at least three hairy, scary monsters under your bed.
How do you survive the night? Will they eat your toes if you get up to use the loo? Are they plotting to encase you in slime and steal all of your toys?
Daron Parton’s latest book, with words by Mitch Frost, provides The Ultimate Survival Guide to Monsters Under the bed. Aimed at children between the ages of 5-8, the biggest challenge for Daron was to make the monsters scary enough to bring the story to life, but not scary enough to create nightmares.
‘I added lots of softer edges to the monsters to minimise the scariness,’ explains Daron. ‘The Children had to be sweet and inquisitive, and the images had to be bursting with colour.’
‘Having a creative job like this gives you the excuse not to grow up, so getting to work on a book where you have to draw monsters, you can’t go wrong.’
After a year of development and production, the book finally screamed its way onto the shelves.
‘It looks FANTASTIC! Your illustrations are just brilliant, and the whole thing hangs together beautifully. I couldn’t be happier!’
