Phill Small was commissioned to create a series of abstract illustrations for a body wash range inspired by New Zealand’s natural beauty and landscapes. Each image needed to capture the essence of a particular location and transport the user there, without depicting specific details of that location.

“I was incredibly honoured to be chosen for this project,” says Phill, who got goosebumps from the vivid brief he received. “I transported myself back to my time living and travelling around New Zealand for inspiration, and particularly enjoyed reminiscing about the helicopter flight my wife and I took around Mt Cook while I was crafting the imagery for the Aoraki Snow variant.”

The illustration brief included information about the desired colour palette, key ingredients and a description of the location, but Phill was given plenty of freedom to add his own interpretations as he went along.

“I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to distill each location down to a few simple brush strokes,” explains Phill, adding that the textural images are designed to create an emotional connection between the product range and the impressive and varied landscapes represented by each variant.
