Generative Koru

Timo Lento has always admired the work of New Zealand abstract artist Gordan Walters, finding his Koru paintings particularly inspiring.

Using a programming language called ‘Processing’, Timo set out to build an application that, with limited direction, would generate a unique piece of abstract art. The program takes care of the shapes and the colours based on an algorithm or rule set he designed.

He runs the program over and over until he finds a design he likes, which he then prepares for printing. All designs are generative, meaning no two pieces are the same.
