You may have seen photos of the mighty Tane Mahuta tree located in New Zealand’s North Island, but do you know the story behind it’s majestic branches?
According to illustrator Shannon Jahnel Lanktree’s wild imagination, this tree was grown and carved by a three headed, three tailed snake, in an attempt to reach the heavens and oversee the world below.
New Zealand’s wild landscapes and weather patterns can be both breath taking and a little scary at times.
While reviewing her travel photos depicting the natural beauty of her home country, Shannon started a project named ‘Beasts of New Zealand’.
‘The photos I had taken were such an amazing mixture of picturesque, mysterious, and out of this world landscapes,’ Shannon explains. “I began to imagine alternate causes for these surreal environments and weather patterns, and the Beasts project was born.’
